AA & Other 12-Step Programs Do Not Have a Monopoly on Recovery — Friendly Reminder from Judith

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to post a friendly reminder to the recovery community that AA and other 12-step based programs do not have a monopoly on recovery. There are many paths to choose from and explore when it comes to getting clean & sober and living a happy, healthy, fulfilling life.

I say whatever you need to do that makes you happy and healthy, DO IT. Get passionate about it, spread the message wherever possible (and appropriate). Most importantly, LIVE IT. Be a living example of whatever program you choose to work.

No monopoly

‘Sound bites’ claiming AA as the only path misrepresent the program, a member writes:

“IF YOU stop drinking without AA, you are destined to be miserable.” “If you stop going to AA meetings, you are destined to relapse.” Remarks like these make seductive sound bites, but they’re untrue and misrepresent the program. AA has neither a monopoly on recovery from alcoholism nor a requirement for members to continually attend meetings.

AA does not claim to be the only successful treatment for alcoholism. The Big Book makes it clear that one is free to pursue other paths to sobriety and happiness. And many people have done just that, solving their alcohol and spiritual problems without the Twelve Steps or with limited assistance from them. It is inaccurate and chauvinistic to assume that because they are not AAs they must be miserable. Just because we may know someone who has stopped drinking on his own and is absolutely miserable does not permit us to generalize.

5/25/17:

I’m struggling with patience with myself and others. I am tired of this struggle — the struggle to stay positive, mindful, redirect my thoughts, and the struggle to stay positive and patient with those around me. I feel like I’m going back to old ways and becoming irritable. I know being alone doesn’t work for me. But being around so many people all the time is starting to wear on me, too. I’m a little afraid of the mindset I’ve been in… it’s easy to make excuses and justify when I’m irritated and impatient because I know just what will make it better in a few minutes. I’ve got to stop thinking that way though, because it’s no longer an option to go back to that. I’ve got nowhere to go, nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. No one that will take me in when/if I’ve been drinking.

Then, I’m also struggling to understand why I’m fixated on getting another drink. It destroyed my family, my life, ME.


Guided meditation: I find myself outside — cool in the shade, warm in the sun. The breeze blows a breath of fresh air in my face. The sun warms my face, neck, hands, back & arms. My feet are stepping one in front of the other to an even beat. I ask my HP for guidance, strength, and peace, just for today. Another breeze blows in my face to remind me that my HP is listening. My feet keep the steady beat as I repeat my mantra in my head to ingrain it into my subconscious. I think of all the things I’m grateful for and practice a few deep inhales and exhales and picture all the good energy flowing in and the negative energy flowing out.


9PM: Well, the day finished a lot better than it began. The weather cleared up and this afternoon/evening was gorgeous. R came back, and it was awesome to see her. R is like a breath of fresh air. Her, F, and M are my favorites. They all give me hope.

New people are starting to open up, and it reminds me of where I came from. I’m keeping this journal to remember where I came from. I forgot the last time and I don’t want to forget this time because it will lead me right back to treatment. And I never want to come back here again. I want a better life for myself and those around me. What a relief it will be for the day that I DON’T think about alcohol.

I still want to figure out the reason behind my impatience with others.

5/26/17: Journaling prompt

If I could tell my younger-self anything, what would it be?

  • You have an addictive personality
  • You don’t need alcohol to fit in – in fact – you don’t need to ‘fit in’ at all
  • You will become an alcoholic if you don’t learn how to control this now — or quit altogether
  • You will end up losing jobs, money, friends, and family if you continue relying on alcohol

  • Keep running!!! (**Side-note**: I was a competitive runner and in high school/college I would consistently run 5-6 minute miles and 5-10 miles at a time. I lose my breath running a few blocks, now.)

I had a fairly good meeting with D today. I say fairly, because I realized my court date is June 12 — not the 22nd — like I originally thought. Part of me is actually glad it’s sooner because that means my consequences will become known and dealt with sooner. But the other part of me is really scared… the police report hasn’t been filed yet, I haven’t officially quit my job yet (so I still technically have an income) and it’s too much to qualify for a public defender and worry about all this. There’s really not a whole lot I can do while I’m in here anyway, plus I have to sign up for a LINK card again & state insurance. But again, I still technically have a job and health insurance through work, so there’s not much I can do about that either…. fuck.

5/30/17:

The last couple days have been, overall, really good. My aunt and uncle came to visit Saturday — we had a good visit. They opened my eyes to the fact that it isn’t just me going through this, it’s hard for everyone. All along I’ve known this, but having them say it (ie. not from my mom or dad or counselor) was eye-opening. I was caught up in ME and it made me realize (again) this is not all about me — other people are affected by my addiction. They gave me some words of encouragement which is always nice.

The only thing I didn’t like was that they brought up that I can’t drink and drive. Like, DUH, I know that. I know it doesn’t look like I know that, considering what’s happened, but I definitely know that is not okay in any way, shape, or form. I just wish people could stop mentioning things like that to me because trust me, I’ve said it to myself a million bazillion times in my head already.

Yesterday (Memorial Day) went really well, too. Instead of walking the Labyrinth, Miranda took us out to play softball. It was a ton of fun. For a few minutes, I felt normal. (Also — Friday night game night was a BLAST — we played a dance game on the Wii and it was hilarious. H got really into it and it was so funny.) Then F surprised us with a movie and ice cream. We watched “Love Isn’t Enough” told from the perspective of Bill W.’s wife, Lois, who started Al-Anon. The movie was really good, it was almost sickening to see how drunk Bill would get… promising to stop drinking and continuing to get annihilated.

The weather has been gorgeous and I’m glad we’ve been able to spend a good amount of time outside.

Tonight my parents came for a family meeting. I read my Goodbye Letter to alcohol and my letter to my HP, and my dad was crying. We were all sobbing. It was so difficult to share these things with them, but I’m so glad I did. It took a lot of weight off my shoulders, and they told me not to worry about holidays, rides, sober living, etc. I think they understand how hard this is for me, even if it’s just understanding that today.

J is leaving Thursday and I don’t know what I’m going to do without her. We talk about real stuff that isn’t related to recovery, which is a nice change of pace.

 

 


OK — now were in the present tense — today, April 14, 2018.

I remember that meeting with my parents and my counselor at Rosecrance. I remember it felt like my heart was being ripped out of my chest, stomped on, and put back in upside-down. It took me a while to get through the letters I read to them, because my sobs were heavy and I couldn’t catch my breath. I hate to say this, but the feeling I had when my parents came in for that meeting, was worse than attending my Grandma’s funeral.

On the note of my Grandma, I truly believe she is part of the concept of a higher power I have come to believe in today. I SO SO SO SOOOOOOO wish my Grandma could be around today, for a couple reasons. One is that I strongly dislike the woman my Grandpa has chosen to spend time with — she is money hungry and selfish and she calls my 78-year old Grandpa ‘fat’ (YOU NEVER SPEAK TO MY GRANDPA OR ANY MEMBER OF MY FAMILY LIKE THAT, EVER), and two is that I believe my Grandma and I would be really close today. Growing up, I was always annoyed with my grandparents’ sloppy kisses and overbearing hugs, but now, I appreciate them. My Grandma was truly a woman with wild dreams and crazy personality. She put herself through nursing school in the 1960s and refused to marry my Grandpa until she graduated. She became a nurse, and for a while, was the breadwinner of the family. She was caring and gentle at times, but boisterous and wild at other times. Sometimes we rolled our eyes, but looking back, I WISH I could tell her how much I love her and how much I look up to her for empowering herself and being a woman of strong conviction. She never said anything she didn’t mean, and sometimes she said things bluntly and brashly, but that was just my Grandma. Some of my favorite memories with her are doing cartwheels in the grass, picking apples from the apple tree in my Grandparents’ backyard, receiving the world’s greatest back-scratch from her, going up north to the cabin, and her prancing around, gleefully playing the accordion. Oh my God do I miss her.

Anyway, having that family meeting with my parents was heartbreaking, but necessary. We needed to heal, all of us. My parents needed to heal from the trauma of constantly worrying if I would make it, and I needed to heal from all the trauma of addiction, psych wards, legal problems, berating myself, allowing myself to be used and abused, ugh.. the list goes on. That meeting was the very, very beginning of the healing process for us (well, for me, I can only speak for myself). But I think it was the first time they truly saw how desperate I was to get better — how serious I was about changing my life once and for all. How done I was with all the chaos and destruction and terror. And I think that allowed them to have a small, very tiny, sense of peace. Which was better than overwhelming dread and fear of days, months, and years previous.


 

I went to lunch with my lovely parents today, and gosh, I just love them so much. I love my family so much. Hell, I love my friends so much. and I love MYSELF so much! What a fucking change from a year ago. It brings a sense of solace to know I have wonderful, amazing, strong, BEAUTIFUL people surrounding me and rooting for me. Shit, I am so grateful today and I’m grateful to have gratitude today.

Writings from Rehab — Letter to HP

This is the letter I wrote to my HP while I was in rehab in May 2017. I call my higher power ‘HP’.

 

5/27/17:

Dear HP ~

I’m not sure who you are, where you are, or what your name is… but I know you have been watching over me. There is no other explanation for why I am alive and well today other than your watchful eye & will. Countless times I should have, or could have, left the mortal world and crossed over to the other side to dance with the devil for eternity. But you had other ideas for me, you have a plan for me.

Not only have I missed the signs you’ve sent me as a warning to change my ways, but, even worse, I’ve turned my head the other way & completely ignored the signs. But, you didn’t give up on me when I gave up on myself & you believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself.

I was blinded by alcohol, I was stuck in a prison cell that no one had keys for. I loathed myself and the things I had done to those around me. I had no self-respect and became so entangled in an abusive relationship with alcohol that I simply gave up on the values, morals, and beliefs I had been taught as a child and adolescent. I began the deep descent of self-hatred.

I estranged family and friends, I told sick lies, and with each lie, the thick, deadly walls were closing in around me. I began to think the only way to get out of this hellish nightmare was to commit a slow suicide, and drink myself to oblivion. I did not have the capacity to care whether or not my death would break the hearts of those who loved me.

One of the worst feelings I ever had was when my mom told me she checked on my life insurance policy in the event she would have to plan for my funeral. Thinking about my parents, planning their only child’s funeral because of some horrific, deadly accident, committed under the influence of a potent, lethal, yet legal posion, was terrifying.

Yet, that did not stop me. It could be chalked up as another one of your warning signs I blatantly ignored. I continued to dig my own grave, and I didn’t realize how close I was to putting the final nail in the coffin until that one Monday morning in early May of 2017.

I don’t remember where it started, what led me to the decision to blow off my responsibilities and drive around while getting drunk, and I definitely don’t remember crashing into a ditch, climbing into the backseat of my still running vehicle to pass out. I don’t remember the police dragging me out of my car to take me to the nearest hospital in efforts to save my life with a .437 BAC. I don’t remember anything. It’s a blank vacuum of space. The next thing I know, I’m handcuffed and being taken to a detox where I was stripped and searched and placed in a cement block room with bells on my bed to alert the nurses of my every move. I was picked up by the Sheriff and brought to the jail in the middle of the night the next evening. They released me from jail with nowhere to stay or go except roam the streets until daylight came.

I was lucky to stumble upon a cheap, dingy, rundown hotel on the outskirts of town. It was nearly 3 AM, and I was contemplating sleeping in the hallway. But, somehow, I found the bell to ring and alert the attendant. I spent my last dollars on a room for the night.

From there, I had to stay at the rescue mission until Rosecrance had a bed open for another go-around at treatment, exactly a year from my last inpatient stay. I realize, now, just how much of an influence you had on that nightmarish situation.

You led the cop to find me in my car to find me before I awoke and decided to keep drinking and driving, killing myself or others, or before I did from too much alcohol in my blood in the backseat of my car, with the engine still on. You guided the cop to take me to a hospital and detox before jail so I wouldn’t choke on my own puke in a jail cell, so nurses would be watching over me while I suffered through the intense withdrawals of alcohol. You led me to the dark, rundown hotel so I wouldn’t have to sleep on the street that night. You kept me safe long enough at the homeless shelter until Rosecrance called. And you put me in a unit full of women and staff who show me I’m not alone & that there is hope.

Now, I believe in you & I believe you have a plan for me. I will no longer fight the idea of you & I definitely won’t purposely turn my head the other way. You work in ways that are beyond my earthly comprehension. I am listening. I am watching. I am here to follow your will, because it is abundantly clear that my way will send me 6 feet under.

Sober AF Thoughts for April 13, 2018

It’s Friday the 13th!!!

I actually like Friday the 13th’s. My grandma was born on a Friday the 13th, I went to inpatient treatment on Friday the 13th (instead of thinking of that negatively — I choose to think about it positively — it was a day I decided I had had enough and I was sick and tired of being sick and tired), I moved into my first sober living on Friday the 13th, I checked into my second inpatient on (not Friday but) the 13th. I moved into my second sober living house on another 13th day of the month. Again, I see these as positive things because I realized I needed help, and maybe it didn’t work the first time, but I did what I could to get myself the help I need.

Anyway, so this Friday the 13th, I have a day off from work.

Not a particularly *fun* day off work, as I have to go to probation, therapy, and a meeting, but it’s still a day I get to take my time in the morning and mosey around while I get ready. I enjoy the feeling of not being rushed in the morning. I like when I wake up naturally, not by the alarm.

Tonight I’m going to a meeting to support and celebrate Shelby’s one year. She gets her one year coin today, and she also happens to be chairing the meeting because the normal chair (who’s also my ex-boyfriend) can’t make it.

I’m excited to go to this meeting. It’s the Friday Night Live CA meeting, I’ve talked about it before. It’s a big, loud meeting, which is intimidating at times but is also just the right dose of loud and fun at other times. I’m also excited because I know my ex won’t be there. There’s nothing between us, but just seeing him is… idk… it tugs at my heartstrings because I do miss him.


So, like I just said, it’s Shelby’s one year anniversary. The actual anniversary was Wednesday, but we’re celebrating more appropriately tonight.

On that note, I was a real shitty person this week and wasn’t there like I should’ve been for her actual one year on Wednesday.

I’m not trying to say ‘I’m so fucking busy, look at how busy I am,’ but I just want to state the facts. I work full-time at a mentally challenging job, where it takes me an hour to get there and an hour and a half to get home. Then, Mon-Wed, I jet off to volleyball, where I’m coaching 2 teams this season, and I get home around 9. Monday nights we also have a house meeting that is mandatory. Thursdays I work late to make up for the fact I leave early on Fridays, and Thursday nights I go to a meeting and catch up on cooking. My cooking days are Thursdays and Sundays, usually. Friday, I go to work early, leave by 1, and go to therapy. By the time I get home, it’s about 4 PM. By this time I am absolutely wiped out. Saturdays and Sundays I cook, run errands, get groceries, do laundry, clean, and catch more meetings to get my required meetings in. I typically go to the office for a few hours to try and stay ahead and work on things that are much easier to do when the office is quiet. I catch up on sleep, chatting with family, and taking care of myself. All the while — I’m coming home to a house full of 14 women.

With all of this going on, plus things like probation, doctor’s appointments, working through my financial situation, and working on myself in recovery, is draining. Sometimes, like this past Wednesday, I get caught up in it all and instead of doing something, I just sit and think about all the things I need to do. There are 2 comparisons I want to make here: it’s like when you have so much to do and you don’t know where to start because everything seems like such a big task, that you just take a nap instead; and, it’s like in the Olympics, when you can see the line of the world record that’s right in front of the athlete who’s swimming or running and they’re trying so hard but they just can’t beat that line. That’s what I feel like sometimes. And, for some reason, it usually occurs on Tuesday and/or Wednesday. Even my mom has noticed that I become overwhelmed on these days, for whatever reason.

So, this Wednesday was particularly challenging. I came home from work feeling like I bit off more than I can chew and like I was approaching a breaking point.

I decided to do some online shopping for things like chapstick and shampoo that I hadn’t found the time to physically go to the store and buy, when Shelby comes home.

I planned on writing her a handwritten letter, getting her a small gift, and letting her know that I truly care for and support her. But all the sudden she’s home, it’s 9 PM, and I hadn’t done any of that.

I felt guilty the minute she walked in the door. One of my roommates says ‘happy anniversary!’ and I was like ‘fuck… it is her one year today.’

This Wednesday also happened to be our house manager’s birthday, and Shelby had planned for us to surprise her with cake and singing happy birthday. I told Allie that I planned on being asleep by the time the gathering was to take place and said my happy birthday to her before the gathering.

She comes up to the room to say ‘hey we’re going to sing now, you wanna come?’

I said ‘I already told Allie happy birthday, I need to try and get some sleep’. She just stood there, looking at me, in disbelief.

I felt SO guilty immediately after saying that. Like why couldn’t I have just taken 15 minutes to go downstairs, sing happy birthday, and get it over with? Not to mention, Shelby’s one year. Let’s not forget about that.

A few roommates come back up to the room and start raving about the cake. I was almost asleep, but I was like ‘oh I want summa that cake.’

So I went downstairs and ate a piece of cake and smoked a cigarette. The tension in the room was evident, people were looking at me with disdain.

I already admitted I was a shitty person on Wednesday night, but I’ll say it again. Not going down to sing happy birthday, not getting Shelby a card or writing a letter, and then going down to have a piece of cake was a really stupid thing to do and it made me look so bad.

I was selfishly caught up in my head with feelings of overwhelm and thoughts of ‘how am I going to keep doing all this?’ and ‘I did this to myself, I have to get through this’ and ‘it’s only temporary, I can do it.’

The look on Shelby’s face when I went down for a piece of cake was disgust, and it made me want to be as small as a grain of rice on the floor.

That night, I lost sleep thinking about how I should’ve just gone down and joined the gathering and then I wouldn’t have to think about what a shitty person I was being. I decided I would text Shelby and Allie in the morning with a heartfelt apology about acting selfishly.

I texted them the next day, saying I am so sorry for acting like I did and that I truly do care about them, and I’m honored to be a part of their journey and I’m grateful they’re a part of mine.

Shelby texted back saying ‘I appreciate this text. Thank you. I was feeling really upset and hurt and angry, but this helps.’

Uuuuuuuuggggggghhhhhhhh if I only would’ve gone down I wouldn’t have had to deal with any of this!

Shelby comes home Thursday night and it took her a while to warm up to me. But she did, and all is well.

Today she asked me if I would do her hair and makeup like I did last weekend for the meeting and receiving her one year coin, and I said of course. When we get her hair and makeup all fixed up, she looks like Pink.

Shelby has expressed that she wants to learn how to do her hair and makeup like I do. So I’m going to go to Walgreen’s today and pick her up some hair products and makeup that matches her skin and makes her glow. I feel good about making amends and getting her some products to help her feel even more beautiful and confident than she already is.

Lesson learned — just partake in little gatherings like this so I don’t have to sit around feeling awful about it later and spend a few days making up for it.


Other than that, I feel pretty lucky to be approaching the one year anniversary myself. My one year is May 9, which is less than a month away. With everything that I’m juggling in my life, I keep thinking to myself about how far I’ve come in the last year.

This time last year I was in the dumps. I was drinking so much booze, every single day. I was occupied with thoughts of drinking and obtaining booze and hiding my hangovers and planning out my drinking all the fucking time. I was at a job I hated, living with my parents, who were trying so hard to maintain any ideas that I would somehow get myself right. I was constantly nauseated, shaky, and worried. I didn’t have any friends. I didn’t have any hobbies. I was depressed, hopeless, and I didn’t look, sound, or act like the Judith that everyone wanted me to be again. I was absolutely miserable. I was on the brink of life or death.

Just for funzies, I’m going to define miserable:

Yep, that pretty much sums it up. I was feeling exactly that this time last year. Wretched, forlorn, despicable, unhappy, needy, causing misery, all of that.

 


 

Something exciting that happened at work this week was my boss’s encouragement to take a photography class.

I’ve been taking pictures at work of new product. It’s something I like to do — get away from my desk, use my creativity. We have props and lights and backdrops to take pictures, so I play around with all of that to get the pictured product to look just so. Here are some examples:

 

So they really like the pictures I’ve been taking and suggested I take a product photography class to really learn how to use the props, lights, and camera.

Earlier in the week, I was feeling a little down about this. I took some awesome pictures, and then that was that. No one said anything or used the pictures on our business social media pages. The marketing girl was taking her own pictures and using those instead. I felt like, well, I had fun while it lasted, and now it’s over.

It was like when I started making short clips for work. I found this app that would put together pictures and videos really nice, and I was stoked about it. My boss and the marketing person were excited, too. Then I noticed my boss telling the marketing girl to put together videos of this and that, and I thought again, well… it was fun while it lasted but I guess that’s not part of my job. On the one hand, I was happy that I could bring this cool, easy app to my boss so we could use it and make videos. But on the other hand, she took it and gave that task to the marketing girl. While it’s more of the marketing girl’s job anyway, I kinda felt like I was a little robbed of something. It was selfish of me to think that way, but I couldn’t help it. I was so excited to make some cool videos and then all the sudden it wasn’t my thing to do anymore. Here’s an example of a video I made for work:

 

So when she suggested I take the product photography class, I felt a revived sense of purpose and creativity. She offered up to $2500 for a class. I found one for $950; but I still need to do some research and make sure the class is legit. I love being able to add things like this to my work life and resume. The class I found offers a certification once completed successfully, and of course, being the millennial I am, I am already excited to add this certification to my LinkedIn profile. LOL.


Well, now I’m just rambling. I have a few things I could rant about this week… like the operations manager at the sober living I’m in and his clear gender bias, etc., or the fact that my WFS mentor hasn’t spoken to me in weeks, or a number of other things. But maybe I’ll talk about that later.

Sober AF Thoughts for March 28, 2018

I love being busy at work.

I really do not like listening to my coworker’s radio because it plays the same songs over and over and over and it makes me cringe and grumpy.

I’m really, really, really excited for the weather to get warmer so I can read outside and walk around more.

One of my colleagues I’ve never met is in town this week. He’s also an alcoholic. Nothing about him makes me think ‘that man’s an alcoholic’ & it is proven yet again that alcoholics don’t have to be of a certain age, skin color, gender, economic status, etc etc. “The disease is more open-minded than those of us who have it.”

I’m so glad my boss understands that I physically cannot meet this deadline for these massive spreadsheets I’m working on. She goes “It’s ok, no worries.”

Those are just some thoughts I had on my way to work this morning.


I’ve been thinking lately of 2 past roommates. One from the 12 Step House in the summer of 2016 and one from my current sober living house. I bring you, Susan and Marge.


The one from the 12 Step House, we’ll call her Marge, was a middle-aged woman. She was beautiful in the eclectic, not your typical blonde-haired blue-eyed sense. She was hilarious, witty, and (most of the time) enjoyable to be around. She had a background in culinary, was a gifted chef, and could make a delicious spread out of scraps from the fridge and canned food in the cupboard.

I actually initially met Marge at the treatment center I went to before the 12 Step House. She came in, fragile and broken, like the rest of us, but had something else about her that I couldn’t put my finger on.

I remember sitting outside at lunch, crying and bent over from laughing so hard at her sarcasm. When I was stuck in a treatment center, examining everything that’s wrong with me and all the behaviors and thoughts that drove me to drink until I physically could not consume any more alcohol, laughter was very, very welcome.

After getting to know Marge a bit, I learned that her rehab stints were in the double-digits. I learned that for the last 30 years, she drank for several months or years at a time, went to rehab, really wanted to stay sober and clean, and would do so for a period of several months or even years before it started all over again. Her story consisted of being a sous-chef at big-name restaurants in downtown Chicago, being single and childless in her mid-40s, both parents still alive and well, an only child, born and raised in the Midwest, going back to school for various courses of study, among several other admirable and interesting things. She had a big personality that attracted people, and like many alcoholics, it was partially to serve a purpose of seeking approval.

It doesn’t matter how BADLY you want this, it comes down to how much pain it caused and accepting that you MUST make changes to not endure the pain any longer.

(Side-note on seeking approval… I am extremely guilty of constantly, obsessively seeking approval and people-pleasing. I want to make everyone happy, and in doing so, I often put my own well-being and happiness on the back burner. I think this is a characteristic of alcoholics, especially female alcoholics. The desire to make people approve of everything… my performance at work, in sports, in school, my internships… my parents’ approval of how I conduct my life, manage my finances, make choices… society’s approval of me as a young woman, a person, a college graduate… I constantly need approval for EVERYTHING. If I feel that I have failed someone or something with the way I make choices and live my life, then that is simply unacceptable to me and I sometimes feel like I just CANNOT go on until I fix it and receive the approving nod from therapists, house managers, roommates, coworkers, bosses, parents, judges, the list goes on and on. I obsessively try to be PERFECT… the perfect roommate, the perfect sober-living resident, the perfect daughter, the perfect employee, the perfect probationer, the perfect coach, the perfect god-damn everything in all places at all times… fuck. It’s exhausting. I haven’t learned the subtle art of not giving a fuck about what other people think of me, at least not fully. I’m a lot better than where I started, but I’ve got to get this people-pleasing, perfectionist shit under control, because it’s putting a huge weight on my shoulders all. the. time.)

Anyway, so I could relate to Marge on several levels… having a big-girl job, being educated, being an only child, trying and failing at sobriety (though, I have not tried and failed as many times as she and I hope to GOD that I never do), seeking approval, having alive and well parents that are very much a part of our lives. She was one of the first people, really the first person in the few treatment centers I had experience with at the time, that I really understood on a personal level.

At this point, I was struggling. At the time, I really wanted the life I knew sobriety had to offer. But, the menacing “one last time” thought was in the corners of my mind, and it would stay there for another year. But, being so down in the dumps, depressed, feeling like a failure in all forms of the word “failure,” and trying to grasp the idea of becoming a member of AA, she brought me comfort in knowing that there are people, like me, who struggle, like we were.

I should mention that the first time I had heard of things like the “Big Book” and the 12-steps like “powerlessness” and “unmanageability” was at this treatment center (Gateway).

Imagine… trying to comprehend just how badly you’ve fucked your life up, fucked relationships with family, fucked finances, fucked your license and driving privileges, driving yourself into a black-hole of suicidal thoughts and addiction, and then you get to a place like rehab, where you NEVER in a million years thought you would end up, and finding out that there’s this entire worldwide organization where people actually organize themselves, read about, believe in, practice on a daily basis, and commit themselves to a program. Then imagine meeting someone that you relate to, and you realize you’re actually not in the wrong place, you’re right where you need to be. Then you find out, wow, this person has been doing this for 30 years… I don’t want to do that! And you keep learning things like… only 3-5% of alcoholics/addicts actually recover in the long run, that more than half of people in treatment are there NOT for the first time, and this is a life-long commitment you have to be willing to make. Someone tells you… ‘you know, you can never drink again,’ and your first thought is literally ‘I’m going to die.’ Then you start making ultimatums to yourself, like ‘well, if I get cancer, I can surely drink then’ or ‘When I’m finally 80, then I can drink.’ You realize that you actually don’t know yourself, like at all, and you have all these emotions and feelings and thoughts that you haven’t had in years, possibly decades. You realize ‘I’ve got a lot to do, and I’m stuck here.’ You realize you’re going to be stuck there for a long time, and what’s going to take even longer, is fixing all the fucked up shit you did to yourself.

When I got to know Marge, all of that occurred to me, like all at once.

Anyway, so I left Gateway before Marge did, and pretty much went to straight to the 12 Step House.

About a month later, the managers at the 12 Step House let us know where about to take in another roommate. They tell us her name is Marge.

Now, since there’s not a lot of Marge’s in the world, I have a pretty good feeling I know who is going to walk through that door. Sure enough, Marge walks in.

I ask, “Did you stay at Gateway all that time?!”

She says, “No, insurance cut me off about a week after you left. I went home with D [boyfriend] and I relapsed, and I realize I need to get out of that environment if I have any chance of getting myself better.”

I am super excited there’s someone I already know moving in with us. I can’t wait to catch up with Marge and get all the deats on what happened at Gateway with who and what after I left. I also realize we’ve got a damn good cook in the house.

Shortly after Marge moves in, I see another side of her I didn’t expect to see.

One night, she is pacing around the house, hands on her head, talking to herself like ‘oh man, what am I gonna do now? God please help me! I don’t know what to do! I don’t know how to handle this!’

I tried to ask what was going on, but after realizing I was in above my head to try and help, I left her alone with her imminent breakdown.

She goes into the office where the case managers were at the 12 Step House. I see her breakdown… a total breakdown of heavy sobs and gasps of air. They close the blinds so we can no longer see what’s going on in the office.

I don’t know what went on that night, and I don’t know what caused the breakdown, but shortly after that, Marge was gone for a week.

It was very abnormal for a resident to be gone and their room and belongings left as-is because the 12 Step House had a huge waiting list. We were told she would return but weren’t given any other details.

She came back eventually, with bags of belongings in hospital bags. Clearly, she had been at the hospital, but for what?! I correctly assumed it was a relapse, sadly.

Apparently, she just had enough one day and went to the park with lots of booze. She got so plastered that the cops had given her tickets for indecency and public nuisance (or something of the like). She had spent the night in jail, then was sent to the hospital for detox and several days in the psych ward, and had returned to our house with a pending court date.

I felt bad for her. Like, it’s one thing to slip. It’s another to slip, fall, and be kicked while your down. I realize she did this to herself, but as an alcoholic, sometimes we just don’t do what a rational person would. As an alcoholic, I think that while the decision to go to the park and buy booze was hers, the decisions made after that very first sip were not hers and she was no longer in control — alcohol and the demons that alcohol awakens were in control.

Fast forward…

Now I’m living in Chicago a year and a bit later, in a new sober living house, finally having surrendered to alcohol. That thought of “just one more” got me and all of that nonsense is detailed in the blog posts starting with “Relapse”.

I get on the bus to go to work one day, and when we stop to pick up other passengers, I see a familiar face. It’s Marge!!!!

She’s moved into another sober living house in Chicago, and is giving sobriety a go again. I am elated to see her, I am so happy she’s alive!

We had a short talk because she had to get off the bus soon after.

One of the things I admire about Marge is her willingness to keep trying. She’s been battling alcoholism for 30 years, has been sober and then relapsed time and time again, but (at least to my knowledge) she STILL hasn’t given up. This disease of addiction is SO POWERFUL that when you are sober, the disease keeps growing stronger, and when you go back to drinking/drugging, you’re immediately worse off than you were before. Knowing that she’s gone from abstinent to drunk to abstinent again, I can’t imagine (and don’t want to imagine) the courage and bravery it takes to once again say ‘I need help.’

I think of her from time to time and I pray that she is OK. I pray she’s still sober and is counting down to her year anniversary. I haven’t seen her since that day, so I don’t know if she’s even still around Chicago. Even though I have her phone number, I decide to keep her at an arm’s length and let the Universe decide when we cross paths, for my own sobriety’s sake.

I pray I don’t have to move back into sober living again when I’m in my mid-forties, childless, single, and struggling, like she does. But that’s NOT to say I don’t admire her for it. She has the strength and the courage of a warrior.

It’s also worth mentioning that when you have friends in recovery, or just know of someone as an acquaintance, you happen to see them and think “wow they’re still alive!”…. hmph.


The other person I’ve been thinking about lately is a past roommate from the current sober living house I’m in, we’ll call her Susan.

Susan was another middle-aged woman, and again beautiful in her own way. She was single, but had an estranged teenage son. She would have had another child, but got an abortion in her late teens during a particularly heavy drugging stage. She grew up in an Army household that moved around quite a bit, and was adopted. She knew who her birth mother was, but didn’t grow up calling that person Mom, and hadn’t talked to her in 20 years. She had also served several years in prison, and had that ‘hard shell’ that people often get after being in that type of institutionalized environment.

While at the sober living house, Susan would show 2 sides of her personality. The first side was pure humility, knowing she didn’t know everything, and believed her purpose was to become a counselor and an author to share her heartbreaking story to the masses. The other side was, well, incredibly unpleasant, intimidating, belitting, know-it-all, “I’m better than you” mentality.

In AA they say that anyone can recover “if they have the capacity to be honest with themselves” and that some are “constitutionally incapable of being honest with themselves,” and those people probably do not have the capacity to recover from addiction.

I truly believe Susan is a person who is constitutionally incapable of being honest with herself, and therefore, cannot recover. At least not until she can get brutally honest with herself.

When I moved in, Susan globbed on to me. She started doing things that I was doing, and roommates took notice. For example, when I first got here, I went to the library almost every day and I finished at the same pace. She started going to the library, checking out books, and reading. While it’s a very healthy habit and coping skill, and I’m glad I influenced her for the better if even just for a short time, other roommates would say to me “Judith, Susan’s starting do like mimic what you do and say. I’ve NEVER seen her pick up a book, and look at her now!”

For a while, the friendship was welcome. She knew how to get around Chicago, what areas to avoid and such, and I knew nothing about that. She had ideas of places to go and things to do, and I was open to the companionship. I didn’t realize at the time, but she invited me to do things that cost money, like a going for lunch or grocery shopping, and would guilt trip me into paying. She would say, “my paycheck comes Friday, I promise I’ll pay you back” or “I’ll do your chore for you if you can get me $20 worth of groceries to get me through the week.” Being very new in sobriety and having that niggling people-pleasing thing I talked about earlier, I obliged. As I said, I seek approval, and upon moving into the house it was clear that Susan was a big-dog around here, so of course, I wanted to get on her good side. I think I spent probably $200 on groceries, transportation, and lunch outings with her.

Then, I started feeling drained around her. I started quietly escaping the room she was occupying, purposely coming home late when I knew she would be home, going for a walk to have a cigarette instead of going on the back deck because she was already on the back deck. I was avoiding her because I felt like my personal batteries would drain rather quickly around her.

She wanted to talk about herself all the time. Anytime I tried to say something, I would get quickly interrupted with the ole “Well do this and do that…” Like, ok, I wasn’t asking for an opinion or even a response. I felt like I was a wall that she was talking at. I wasn’t a person she was conversing with, I was a wall that she was talking AT.

I think she started to take notice I was avoiding her, and she dealt with it by trying to control and manipulate me. One evening, she came home, all pissed about something. I was so over it. First, I could tell the instant she walked in the house with the way the door was closed. Second, I had enough of her whining and angry sides. Third, I had a long day that day and I just wanted some peace and quiet. I was still very new in sobriety and had a relatively short fuse.

She starts screaming about how she left her debit card in the ATM (like one of those ATMs that swallows your debit card when you’re making a transaction). I said “I’m sorry to hear that, but I’m sure the bank has it.” Other roommates chimed in with similar responses. Out of nowhere, she SCREAMS at me “Judith, I’m talking to YOU! What, do you not CARE THAT I LOST MY DEBIT CARD?! ALL MY MONEY COULD BE GONE! ANYONE COULD BE OUT SPENDING MY MONEY RIGHT NOW! HOW DO YOU NOT CARE!?!? GOD YOU’RE SO SELFISH!”

At this point, I walked out the door to escape the room that was closing in on me with all the screaming and belittling that was going on. Several roommates follow me out. I start to tear up because I hadn’t been screamed like that for a long time, especially when I know I didn’t do anything worth a screaming-at for. Other roommates try to make me feel better, saying ‘she shouldn’t have gone off on you like that, I think she went off on you because she knows your trying to get away from her and it’s making her feel insecure. You’re the only person that’s paid attention to her in months.’

Ugh… so at this point I feel bad, I feel like I shouldn’t have walked away and just let her talk (or yell, or scream) about leaving her debit card in the ATM. She has no one she can talk to. I’m the only one that even pays attention to her.

So, a few days later, she comes up to me and gives me a tearful apology about how she’s working on her anger and she’s really sorry she blew up on me and that I didn’t deserve to be treated like that. We hugged, and I walked away like, well my mind is pretty much made up that you’re not so great to be around, so I’m a-gonna keep you at a distance.

Two-sides — the one angry, intimidating, red-hot rage side, and the other, tear-filled apology, humble side. These two sides showed themselves quite often, day after day, and it was no wonder I was the only one that paid attention to her after a while.

I felt (and still feel) bad for her. She has so much emotion and mental illness (bipolar, depression) that goes unaddressed. She runs the people that care for her into the ground and then she walks all over them and then she wonders why no one listens to her. I can’t imagine being so wrapped up in myself and so sick (for lack of better words) to not realize that I’m perpetuating my own madness. Her ‘hard shell’ doesn’t allow too many people in, and once people are in, they are in the grips of Susan. I feel bad that she has so many demons to conquer, all while battling mental illness and addiction.

Well, while she was in this house, she achieved over a year and a half of sobriety. It wasn’t her longest stint of sobriety, but that doesn’t matter – a year and a half is nothing to look down upon.

While she was here she was also on probation for theft, drug-related charges, and some other things. She completed her probation a few months before she left (aka, got kicked out).

While I was away from the sober living, in jail, I got word that she had left. Mind you, I was in jail so I had no idea what happened and I just assumed that she ‘dropped dirty’, meaning tested positive for drugs.

I come home and get the full story — she stole a helpless roommates (I say helpless because this woman that she stole from is 70-something years old) iPhone, and not only did she steal it, but proceeded to manipulate the WHOLE house into believing it was someone else.

Now, in the previous months, things had gone missing. Make up, perfume, $20 bucks here, $300 there. She was always adament that it wasn’t her, and was one of the new roommates or something. All along we had a suspicion it was her because she was just so adamant that it wasn’t her and in fact, she would get something stolen right after someone else had something stolen! How ironic.

The house manager evacuated every room in search for the missing iPhone, because Old Lady had a feeling it was Susan, but didn’t want Susan to feel singled out for fear Susan would cause her physical harm.

House Manager evacuates Susan’s room, and Susan attempts to bring her purse with her. House Manager says “purse stays here” and Susan puts up a fight about leaving her purse behind. Low and behold, the iPhone was in her purse, in the same case that the Old Lady had it in, but had been factory restored, resulting in a loss of all data, pictures, notes, etc. Old Lady was devastated because she didn’t know how to back anything up on her phone to the cloud, therefore, all this stuff was stored solely on her iPhone.

So, Susan gets kicked out for stealing. She probably stole much more than that, like all that missing money and shit, but she was caught red-handed with the phone so it was the phone that did her in.

Susan begs House Manager to let her stay, just for the night, so she doesn’t have to find a place to stay. House Manager says absolutely NOT, you are now a threat to everyone in this house, you must go now or I’m calling the police. Unfortunately, Susan was discharged from probation just days or weeks prior, so the incident would no longer be reported to a probation officer who could threaten jail or even prison time for violating probation.

So, Susan leaves. House Manager works with Susan (fun for her!) and provides us updates on Susan on occasion.

Recently, Susan relapsed. She picked herself up and dusted herself off for a short time, but House Manager says she hasn’t been to work in weeks. House Manager says she was caught stealing and went back to jail. House Manager says no other sober living home will take her because it is known, within the sober living community of Chicago, that this woman steals and is a threat to roommates.

I think about Susan in the sense that I’m on probation, and I’m not staying sober solely for the fact that I’m on probation. I’m staying sober for me, and me alone. When I’m off probation, I’m determined to not go back to the ways that got me on probation in the first place. I think about Susan as a reminder that I have to be BRUTALLY HONEST with myself about the lifelong struggle I will forever have to deal with that is sobriety. If I catch myself thinking ‘hmm, wine sounds like a good idea…’ I remind myself of what happened to Susan (and Marge) and I get real with myself, saying ‘wine sounds like death.’ If there’s one thing that AA preaches that is true to me, it is that I have to be rigorously honest with myself otherwise I’m constitutionally incapable of recovery.

5/17/17

PM: Overall, I was kind and forgiving to myself today. I had a meeting with D today, but it got cut short because we were supposed to go to an off-campus meeting; but because of inclement weather, we couldn’t go. I practiced acceptance and didn’t get upset about the things I could not control. Above all, I must put my recovery in front of everything else. Everything will fall into place if I just do the next right thing and recover. If I don’t pick up, if I don’t put myself into a situation where alcohol will stare me in the face – it will not have power over me. Only when I have given the power to alcohol will it affect my life the way it did in the past.

F challenged me to get real tonight with my addiction. If I was under the influence of alcohol and cocaine/benzos were put in front of me… would I do them? Probably. But if I was sober, would I do those things? probably not. So – no, I’m not just addicted to alcohol. It may start with alcohol, but it will lead to other things if I continue to deny my problem with alcohol.


 

5/18/17 ***Warning to mom & dad: I wrote this only 10 days into sobriety, these thoughts and feelings have changed. Please keep that in mind.***

10 days sober. Easy does it. Just for today.

Today I felt juxtaposed – happy, but sad. Excited, but scared. Smart, but stupid. Loved, but not worthy. Grateful, but cynical. I just feel displaced. Like I shouldn’t be here. Like I should be at home with my parents, watching House, sitting with my cat, enjoying a glass of wine. But, I ruined that chance with the morning I decided to drive around and get drunk instead of going to work. That’s what separates me from them. I decide driving around and getting drunk (and consequently get another DUI) is better than showing up to work and doing my job. They wouldn’t do that. They would fulfill their responsibilities and go to work and pay bills. I thought about alcohol the majority of the day and couldn’t wait to get home and pour myself a glass of wine and be lazy on the couch all night. It’s pretty sad that’s all I looked forward to. I waited around all day until we could go where we were going to drink, or – I waited around until it was an ‘acceptable’ time to drink. Living on my own, with Mandy, there was no such thing as an acceptable time, all times were acceptable. The more I think about it, the more I think they [parents] are truly mourning. I don’t think they know how to spend time with me without alcohol. I think they knew last summer’s sobriety was temporary and that eventually, I would be drinking with them again, so they didn’t think too much of finding other things (that were sober) to do with me. I don’t think they know what to do about holidays and weekends – knowing things will never be ‘normal’ for me again.

[***Again — I wrote this only 10 days sober. It is obvious that I was projecting my own fears and insecurities onto my parents and believing that’s what they thought when in reality, it was what I was thinking***]

9PM: I really need to keep practicing acceptance with my parents – that I can’t (and have no right) to change their behavior and the way they feel about everything — everything I’m putting them through now, everything I have put them through in the past, and everything I will put them through in coming months. I literally can’t imagine what my mom must feel — she’s been going through and dealing with addiction her entire life. I feel for her (and my dad) I really do – but they aren’t in my shoes and don’t understand what I’m going through either. I don’t think they truly understand what it’s like to put yourself through treatment, commit to getting sober, and then participate in the series of events that led up to a 2nd DUI, detox, cheap hotel, getting my car out of the impound lot, staying at the rescue mission, and go back to treatment to start it all over again. It’s degrading, embarrassing, expensive, and just makes me feel like an outcast of society.

Anyway, we went to the Japenese Gardens for a fun sober activity and it was fucking hard, because I looked at their brochure and saw there was an ‘uncorked’ event that sounded like a lot of fun. There were stemless glasses on all the tables and I saw some wine on the back table of the bar. I could almost taste the dry, bitter, sweet wine.

But-I will find other fun, sober activities to participate in the more time I invest in sobriety.

Positive affirmations for the day —

I am worth it. 

If I keep doing the next right thing – things will fall into place and my life will come back together.

I deserve to be happy and free.

I am not defined by my addiction.

I am stronger than the booze.

I can do this.

I love myself.

 


5/20/17

Yesterday, my mom came to visit. It was hard to look her in the eye because I know I’ve hurt her a lot. But – I was a bit surprised at some of the things she said. After she was the one who said ‘what’s after sober living?’… she told me to not worry about getting my stuff there, getting to court dates, and (possibly) the first couple weeks rent, IF I keep doing the next right thing.

PM: My dad surprised me with a visit today! I couldn’t believe it. He is so emotional about what I’m going through – it does make me feel like he understands and feels for me. He cried and of course, I sobbed. He explained to me that ONE decision can change the rest of my life – and he’s exactly right. That’s why I need to keep my mantra in the front of my head at all times (keep doing the next right thing). It was such a nice surprise – totally unexpected. It showed me that they ARE there – they do support me. It’s like what they always tell me – I have to show them, my words are empty. Well, they have to show me, too. Not because of anything they’ve done (besides heated words in the moment), but because I need to see it and validate their words (that they still support me). I explained to him that it started as something to help me relax after work, have fun with family and friends, etc. and turned into a habit, which is normalized in our family. He explained to me that he understands there’s something wrong with my brain. I’m just elated that he seems to understand this isn’t something I can just decide to stop. I’ll have to think about what I want/need to explain to them in our family meeting, because I really don’t know what’s left to say. They just want to SEE me do better. It’s that simple.

Other than that – it was a pretty eventful day, actually. F went through my 1st step with me… she was proud of me and said I seem to get it and that I seem to know myself. It was hard to write some of that stuff down, and not just admit it, but accept it. And as F said, admitting it is the easy part. Accepting it means I have to do something about it. And I’m prepared to do what I need to do this time — because I want to leave that life/person behind me because I don’t know that person, I don’t like that person, I never want to see her again [speaking of my alter-ego drunken self]. I need to work on step 2 and find my higher power… which is a struggle for me.

Then F got upset with the unit because someone came in here (and the rest followed) without staff present. She got so pissed off and no one ‘knew’ who came in the unit first. A was SO disrespectful to her. I was thinking how I would never talk to staff like that… but A’s been pissed since she lost her binder. It’s been a lot of negative energy… which I don’t need.

Positive affirmation for the day: I am worth it. I deserve sobriety and the life sobriety has to offer. I have people who love and support me. I’m a good person with good intentions. I love and forgive myself. If I keep doing the next right thing and put recovery first – things will fall into place and my life will come back together.


 

I remember those first visits with my parents while I was in treatment… they were SOOOOO hard. My heart literally hurt when I would see them. I wanted to just be hugged and nurtured like a child when I saw them, forgiven for any wrongdoing and coddled. At 10 days sobriety, I was extremely fragile and sensitive. I am normally a sensitive person anyway, but my emotions, nerves, and anxiety were unbearable at this time.

I don’t have the proper words to explain the range of emotions I had when they came to visit… overjoyed, embarrassed, shameful, guilty, a little resentful, loved, nervous… and so many more. However, since I was so low and not-so-far removed from the rock bottom I had hit days earlier, and could barely find it within me to think of a reason why someone would love me and care about me, it felt so good to have my parents make the drive to visit me.

I made a note above about projecting my own fears and insecurities onto my parents and believing that’s what they thought about me. At this very early and fresh stage of being sober, I could NOT fathom what it would be like to do much of anything without alcohol, especially having fun without it. When I said something along the lines of ‘I don’t think my parents know how to spend time with me sober’… what I really meant, which is clear to me now, is that didn’t know how to spend time with myself sober, so how would I be able to be around other people sober? It was so foreign to me to spend time with family without alcohol. But, guess what, we’ve done it many times now, even holiday’s and full weekends, and it’s still fun, there’s still a lot of laughs, and we all seem to manage just fine ha!

Writings from Rehab, part 3

5/15/17

OMG I slept terrible last night. My roommate snores so bad I could hear her over earplugs and a fan. The exhaustion is making me have a negative outlook and be grumpy. I’ve got to turn this around so I can get the most out of today. So I can be happy and positive and not turn people away from me. So I can remain teachable and humble and positive. I’m feeling drained. But I cant let it get me down, or slow me down,

2:30PM: Well, since this morning, I’ve managed to get in a better mindset.

5:45PM: Today was another up & down day. F took me to get my stuff at the homeless shelter and I was totally unprepared to go into the outside world. It was such a surprise, really. All the sudden I was leaving campus and back out into the real world. It reminded me of how overwhelming it’s going to be when I leave. A couple things:

  • Reality is going to hit hard
  • At least I’ll be going to another safe place – sober living – hopefully. No – I’ll definitely be going, I just don’t know where.
  • I’ll be more ready when the time comes.

We learned about Family Education from P, the guy who runs it. I thought, WOW, my parents could really learn a lot from this. I thought they would be all about it. But, when I talked to my mom, her voice was flat and she didn’t seem to want to learn more about what I am going through. She said, ‘do we really need to do that? don’t we kind of know enough about it?’

It really disappointed me. I want them to know how hard this is to go through, especially right away. But I guess I can’t blame them. They got another reminder of just how bad I fucked up by getting another ticket for trespassing when I got my DUI. Great. Just fucking great.

I could get pissed that they’re opening my mail, but I can’t. I violated their trust, rules, principles, everything by making the choice I did last week.

But – I HAVE TO FORGIVE MYSELF, even if they don’t. They will come around. Maybe not today, or tomorrow, or next week/month. And right now they have a right to be mad and upset with the decision I made while I was under the influence. But, I don’t need to bring myself down because of that, I just need to do the next right thing. The next right thing is staying tonight and tomorrow and throughout the length of my treatment and head to sober living after this.

Today we had fitness and I worked out pretty hard — considering I’ve starting smoking cigarettes again. It felt good and it wore me out.

We also did a Labyrinth exercise, which was supposed to be relaxing and mindful, but I just have an issue calming my mind enough to not think about 100 different things. M says if we keep practicing it’ll get easier. It would be so nice to only think about 1 thing at a time instead of worrying about 100 things that may never come to fruition.

F told us some pretty funny stories tonight about the irony of her marriage. Her and her husband got married by the judge that sent her to prison and her PO was at the wedding. It made me think about how sober life can be more than anything I can imagine at this time. She’s such an inspiration and when we were on our way to the shelter she just kept reiterating–DON’T PICK UP. If I don’t pick up alcohol, I mean physically have it in my hand, it doesn’t have power over me. As soon as I pick up though, I become powerless, and my life becomes unmanageable. I’ve realized I’m not just addicted to the alcohol, I’m addicted to the lifestyle of chaos. Once my life becomes somewhat peaceful and put back together, I fuck it up. I self-sabotage. I can’t stand the quiet, peaceful, potential-filled life I could have if I just would stick to the damn program.

A new girl, C, who came here tonight straight from jail, seems to totally get where I’m coming from and I’m so glad I’m not alone in this feeling. We talked about how she was sober for 4 years, had a house, cars, and ‘the life’ with her boyfriend, as as soon as she moved back to R***ford, she threw it all away within a week – “just in the name of one more” as F would say. Sounds a lot like what I did to myself last fall… as soon as I got out on my own, I self-sabotaged and thre it all away.

My positive affirmations for today:

  • I can do this.
  • I am a good person.
  • My addiction does not define me and neither do my decisions while I was under the influence.
  • ***I’m worth it.

 

5/16/17

AM: This morning I’m feeling irritated with some of the ladies in the group. I just can’t stand when people are here — lucky enough to be in inpatient when there’s people on the streets struggling, or in jail waiting, or white knuckling until they can get in — just seem to take it for granted, or like it’s a vacation, or like they can just go back to normal life after this. It is so not like that. Also — I’m irritated with people who have a place to go after this, like their parents, and are mad about it. GOD! At least your not fucking homeless! Like I’m going to be unless I find a place to go. I mean, I doubt they’re going to let me out of here with no place to go…. at least, Gateway wouldn’t have let me out until I had a place to go. I can only hope – and I guess for the first time in a long time, I will say this — I can PRAY. PRAY I’m not going to be homeless and go back down the wrong path after this.

2:15PM: My thoughts today have been very scattered. First insurance needs something from me. I really need to get my disability paperwork in, and my parents are coming to pick up my car and drop off money tonight. I just feel overwhelmed and like I have so much to take care of in a very short amount of time. Arranging sober living, talking to my work, working things out with my parents. I just want to get into sober living now, so I can get my life back started again. My counselor in in clinicals/busy and the staff won’t let me make these types of phone calls from the unit. PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE.

It’s only full day #4 and I’m already thinking about moving to sober living?!? Maybe I need to slow down and take this one hour at a time. I can’t leave, that’s not an option. Everyone is complaining about groups, sleep, food, living situations after this. UGH!

4:30PM: I am really looking forward to meeting with D again tomorrow. I’m hoping to accomplish a few things:

  • Short-term disability paperwork
  • Make a call to my mom and potentially set up a family session/convince her to come to family info sessions
  • Get ahold of the courts to get a public defender
  • Get applications for some recovery homes

9PM: Today was another up & down, crazy day. Things I wish to improve & work on:

  • Getting irritated with other people who are on their own personal journey to recovery
  • My relationship with my parents
  • A plan for afterwards (sober living).

I saw my dad today because they came to pick up my car but my mom had already left. My counselor D offered for me to go down with her and talk to my parents. Thinking back, maybe I wasn’t ready to see him. The pain I’ve caused them is still very fresh. They don’t have to forgive me yet — and I can’t control when they’ll forgive me — but I can’t let that get in the way of forgiving myself, or accepting the consequences that will be coming for the actions I’ve chosen to make.

They will come around eventually – it’s not that they don’t love me, or support me. They’re just hurt. And I don’t know what to say to them anymore. My words are empty. Only my actions have substance – and right now those don’t even have much substance. So I just have to keep doing the next right thing. If I keep doing the next right thing – things will fall into place, in time.

“life keeps getting simpler and easier… by taking care of the internal environment via the 12 steps, and letting the external environment take care of itself” (AA book pg 14).

“Acceptance is the answer to all of my problems.” I must accept life on life’s terms, and part of that is that I can never drink again. And part of me thinks that my parents mourn that, too. I think that they want to be able to drink w/me. They want things to go back to the way they were. But they never will be the same again. I will not be able to participate in the types of weekend and holiday activities that they do.

My positive affirmations of the day:

I love myself. I am a good person. My addiction/disease does not define me. I deserve sobriety and the life sobriety has to offer. I deserve to be happy, despite my past transgressions. I love myself and I have people who love and support me in my journey to sobriety.

 

 

Business Networking… Sober AF.. and other things

Good Morning!

Ehhh… I’m not feeling that chipper this morning. It’s more like…. *grumble grumble*  **yawn** *good mornin*….

So I’m up this morning (more like the middle of the night) before the clock even hits 4 AM. I don’t know what’s been going on lately, but for the past 6 weeks I haven’t been sleeping all that great. I get to sleep just fine, and I sleep very well for about 4 or 5 hours, and then I get up around 2:30 to go to the bathroom and it’s all over with. Very frustrating. I’m a person who needs a lot of sleep and I don’t function well as a person, employee, friend, coach, and recovering alcoholic when I’m exhausted. Humph.


So, yesterday I happened to walk through the conference room at work and I saw my boss and the sales guy picking out some items, literature, knick-knacks, etc. and packing them up as if they were going to a conference or something. I was like ‘oh, whatcha got goin on in here?’ and they were like ‘oh just getting ready for the association’s Chicago area conference tonight, you wanna go?’ and I was like ‘um, sure, why not’ and they were like ‘I thought you had volleyball on Tuesday nights?’ and I said ‘yeah, usually I do, but our games don’t start for another week,’ and they said ‘alright, cool, it’ll be fun, we’ll leave around 4.’

I woke up yesterday morning, and, like most days, wanted to be comfortable and trendy. I did my make-up as usual, and nothing special with my hair. It was just another chilly, grey, early spring Tuesday.

When they invited me to the show, my initial reaction was ‘cool, I get to go to another event!’ and quickly it turned into anxiety because I didn’t bring make-up to freshen up with, I didn’t have any of my logo work shirts/sweaters, my hair was looking a little messy, and my shoes were dirty (to me, my shoes are dirty unless I’ve just scrubbed the white part of the sole with bleach). In the industry I work in (Kitchen & Bath), there’s a lot of interior designers, architects, and very wealthy people that are dressed to the 9s and judge-y.

Anyway, so my boss is gathering up different shirts we have around the office for me to try on and we find one that is big, but it works. Check.

She proceeds to tell me what I can expect — really good hors d’oeuvre, lots of designers, and various vendors within the industry that manufacture and/or distribute granite, quartz, cabinetry, etc. She also mentioned there’s an open bar but they have non-alcoholic beverages as well.

I’m not bothered by any of it — even the open bar. I know what’ll happen if I drink, I don’t want to partake in any of it, and it’s really not an option anyway because I’m on probation and I live at a sober living house.

Me and the sales guy (who’s also my boss’s son) head out to the conference, and I’m feeling a little nervous that I’m not as refreshed as I’d like to be, and my shoes are dirty, and my shirt’s too big, and my pants are too tight, I’m getting fat again, I don’t look good…. etc. etc.

We get to the show and it’s super freakin’ cold and very windy outside. We’re in a large warehouse like building with lots of vendors set up at tables, and designers, builders, and architects are just starting to show up to walk around and see new trends, network, etc.

The conference worker guy leads us to our table, in the back, right by the big garage-style door for trucks to drop off deliveries. Ya know how I said it was super cold and windy? Well, this garage door wasn’t helping… it was rattling with the wind, to the point that we had to raise our voices a few decibels to be heard by the person standing right in front of us and at least a good 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the warehouse.

People start walking around the show, dropping by our table, asking questions, commenting on our new products, asking for a catalog, stuff like that. I’ve forgotten about how frumpy I look, and I’m getting in the zone talking about our products to these very wealthy, upper-class, posh designers.

As the time goes on, I can start smelling the wine on people’s breath, and I start to see people coming by with little spills on their shirts, a few red wine drops on the collar.

The caterers are coming around with delicious little sausages, meatballs, chicken-on-a-stick, ham and cheese sandwiches, etc. I resolve to settle my nerves and cravings with food.

As time goes on, this one lady stops by our table. She’s carrying a glass of red wine that has little drops down the side of the cup from sloppy sipping. Her name tag is stained purple from spilling wine, and her sweater underneath is showing some spillage, too. Her lips are lined with crimson, and her teeth are starting to turn purplish-blue. The smell coming from her face is… I don’t know how to describe it… triggering, for sure. A little disgusting, kind of making me gag, but also it smells so sweet and bitter. What I’m trying to say is, she was very close to my face and all 5 of my senses were picking up on her beverage of choice.

She starts talking to me, and she’s standing uncomfortably close to my face. She asks where we are located, I tell her the name of the suburb were in. She’s like ‘YEAH, I know, I’m right around the corner, I thought you would recognize the name of the business on my name tag and know that.’ Like… ooops, SILLY ME! How could I not know your business is around the corner? I never, ever, have any reason to keep going down that road to potentially see your business, I’ve never heard of your business before, I’ve been living in Chicago for less than 10 months… I mean, how dare I NOT know of this woman’s business!!!

She asks the sales guy next to me, ‘do you know where we are located?’ and he’s like ‘yeah, you’re around the corner of us on L drive, a little to the south,’ and she turns to me like, ‘SEEEEEEEEEE he knows! He knows where I’m at. Looks like you’ve got some learning to do.’

GAG ME.

She continues to comment on the finish on one of our shelves that we call ‘espresso.’ She’s like ‘that’s so not the industry standard of espresso! I mean, that can’t be called espresso.’ Me and the sales guy look at each other like… uh ok.

She’s looking down her nose at me, which isn’t hard to do, because I’m all of 5’3″ and most people are looking down at me, and giving me one of those ‘wine smiles’ with stained lips and teeth and reeking of red wine, so strong, that I have to walk away when she finally leaves and step outside to get some fresh air.

She comes back later with some friends in tow, and says ‘so now, WHERE are we located?!?’ I’m like… fuck off woman.. but of course I kindly say ‘Lincolnwood’, and she’s like ‘that’s right!’ Chiding me like I’m a little kid. Fuck. Off.

Although I’ve been to a big trade show with my company in Orlando in January, there was something about this one that was just a little, IDK, difficult for me. Maybe the lack of planning and preparation? I felt very under-dressed, which led to less self-confidence than usual. I’m not sure. It doesn’t really matter… I got through the night just fine, met some new business contacts, and made it through another event where alcohol was freely served and I didn’t imbibe. Yay me.

Other than the 1 lady, most people respected my personal space, which is enough room that the stench of wine doesn’t trigger my gag reflex. UGH, this woman just made me feel like I didn’t belong in that room. I am tired of feeling like I have to prove my worth to be standing in a room or sitting in a seat at a conference, business meeting, AA meeting, or any other meeting for that matter. Like… everyone just needs to leave me the fuck alone… ya hear?!


 

Something I didn’t anticipate when I was promoted to E-Commerce Development Manager is this new decision-making responsibility I have. This is new to me. So far in my career, my decision-making has been limited to very low risk, low involvement types of situations. I’m usually handed the decision by the manager and told to follow through with the decision, I don’t have to do any of the analysis or assume any of the risk, I just do.

Now, my bosses are asking ME what we should do about certain things. I have a big decision resting on my shoulders right now that’s a go, no-go and risky decision. One of my bosses is ready to throw in the towel, the other boss really wants to see this project through. We all have more questions than answers, and, umm… well, I just started learning about this specific thing a week and a half ago, and I have to make this decision ideally tomorrow, but next Friday at the absolute latest. I have no idea what I’m doing and I feel like these dogs:

I mean, one would logically assume that with a promotion, you would be expected to make more decisions that are inherently more risky than the decisions you made before the promotion. That makes total sense to me, now. I didn’t think about it beforehand.

For now, I’m excited about working more hours, and pouring myself into work. Why not? I don’t have kids or a husband, currently I have no pets to come home and snuggle with, so why not spend as much time as I can at the office at this time in my life? I know the time will come when I’m not so excited and I’ve got other things to tend to in my life, but for now, I want to dive right in.

I’m certainly not complaining about this, in fact, I am relishing in the opportunity to become a key decision-maker in the business. It’s exciting and well, kind of fun to me. It’s something to get passionate and knowledgeable about. It’s kind of cool having my bosses, who I greatly admire and respect, turn to ME for opinions and decisions.

That’s just it… it’s new, unexpected, and unknown territory. Which is scary, but exciting. So far in sobriety, I’ve done really well in the unexpected and unknown territory areas of my life.

It’s like…. woah… I have a career again!


 

The other thing on my mind today is the fact that I’m not making enough meetings in the week, and I got a talking-to by the house manager about it last night.

I’ve said it before but for those who are unaware — I live in a sober living environment and am required to attend 4 meetings per week. Meetings include AA, NA, CA, WFS meetings, meetings with sponsors/mentors, and therapy. I get a solid 3 meetings/wk in, I’ve just been struggling for some time with that pesky 4th meeting.

Currently, my 3 meetings are compromised of: Therapy, in-house meeting at my sober living house, and typically Friday nights.

I just started full-time, I just started the volleyball season, and I’m enjoying the fact that I’m busy living a LIFE now. I have family to visit, friends to make, food to eat, and things to do now, and by the end of the day, I’m wiped out and need some me-time. I NEED my me-time, you & I both don’t wanna know what it’s like when I don’t get that time to recharge my batteries. I’ve got things going on in my life that are here to stay now (if I stay sober) and that’s exciting, and I’d rather tend to those things and my self-care than forcing myself to take 2ish hours out and sit through a meeting, all the while thinking, I really want to just be reading right now, or blogging, or relaxing.

Apparently my life has gotten too life-y and I have to find time to make more meetings in order to avoid a meeting contract, where I will be required to go to a meeting every day for at least 30 days, which I can’t handle that right now.  I still have rules to live by for the next couple months before I move out of sober living.

Here’s how our conversation went:

A(house manager): So, I need to talk to you for like 2 minutes, and about 60% of it you’re going to like.

J(Me): OK, let’s go in your room.

A: So, for the last couple of weeks, you haven’t made 4 meetings a week, and we need to figure out how to get you to that 4th meeting, because I see you’re regularly making 3, but you know the rules.

J: I knew this conversation was coming. When you didn’t talk to me about it last week, I had a feeling I would hear about it this week, and well… here we are.

A: I know you have a lot going on right now with work, coaching, probation, and everything else, and I admire you for that, but we’ve gotta figure something out.

J: I understand. I’m stuck in a tough place. On the one hand, I don’t want to lie to you and bullshit my meeting sheet, but on the other hand, I don’t want to start resenting meetings by forcing myself to go when I need to just take some time to decompress and relax.

A: I get it. But rules are rules. Would you be interested in starting another WFS meeting here at the house? All you need is one other person to make it happen. You can do it whenever you want. I think weekends would be a good time because we don’t have a lot going on around here on the weekends.

J: Yes! I would totally be interested in that. I think the new people in the house could definitely benefit from learning about WFS and another/alternative way to stay sober.

A: I agree. So you just let me know a time and I’ll send a text to everyone, and we’ll make it work. See, I told you you were going to like about 60% of what I was going to say.

J: You’re right. I just really don’t want to bullshit you, make excuses, and stress myself out trying to make 4 meetings when I’m busy living a life that I enjoy and one that is filled with exciting and healthy things that will last me a lifetime.

A: For sure, and I appreciate that, it would be easy for you to just write in the 4th meeting when you didn’t really go, but you would only be hurting yourself.

Basically, that’s where the conversation ended.

So, at the end of the day, I’m not making enough meetings, but I’m going to do another meeting at my sober living house to help both myself and others get in another meeting for the meeting sheet/requirement.

Here’s where I stand with this at this moment:

I don’t resent meetings like I used to. I’ve come a LONG way from where I started, where I couldn’t STAND meetings. They used to be painful, boring, and triggering. Now, I do enjoy certain meetings. I like certain meetings because of the people, the format of the meetings, and the time of day/week. I will no longer force myself to go to a meeting because I know I’ll fall back into resenting meetings, finding excuses, and stressed out. Let’s not go there. That’s no fun.

However, personally, I think it’s better to build a new life with ‘normal’ things instead of just relying on meetings to stay sober. I know several people in this house who are doing the exact same things that they were doing when they were in active addiction, the only thing that’s changed is that they go to meetings. I don’t want to be like that. I want to have lots of other things to help me cope and get me out of my head. These things include: reading, cooking, blogging, meeting up with someone for coffee, coaching, playing sports, comedy shows, volunteering. But, none of these things count as ‘meetings’ so I can’t put them on my meeting sheet.

Hence, the ‘recovery-related activities‘ I posted the other day, which I am bound and determined to adhere to when I move out of this house.

Meetings, alone, don’t do it for me. I need more intellectual, educational, fun, social things to do. I just don’t have the time to live a life I don’t want to live anymore, and that includes making myself do something that I don’t want to, like making 4 meetings a week.

Am I making excuses? I don’t think so. Maybe I need to examine my motives a little more, but I’ve come to the realization that when life gets big, you just gotta go with it, and stop comparing yourself to others. I’m no longer comparing myself to someone in this house who goes to a meeting everyday and loves it and trying to figure out ‘why can’t I be like that?’ and instead take pride and joy out of the way I find peace and happiness. Ya know what I’m sayin?

Judith’s ‘Recovery-Related Activities’

Hi guys. Let’s waste no time with formalities and dive right in.

When I move out of the sober living house I’m in, I will no longer be required to attend 4 meetings per week. I struggle attending 4 meetings per week because I have lots of other healthy and fun things going on… therapy, reading, working, coaching, visiting with family and friends, self-reflection, watching movies/shows, cooking, eating, etc. So, instead of struggling to get to meetings and then resenting the meetings and feeling like I want to drink because I just stressed myself out by carving out time for a meeting, I’m going to go with a more holistic approach to the meetings requirement.

When I talked to my therapist yesterday, I told her that when I move out, I’m not necessarily going to hold to the 4 meetings per week, but I’m going to hold myself to 4 ‘recovery-related activities’ per week. I like meetings, but I don’t get what I need out of meetings alone. I need other things in my life that fill me with purpose, expand my knowledge of self and the world around me, and enthusiasm for life. Some people can recover with meetings alone. Not me. I need more. (I always need more… I’m an addict & alcoholic, after all.)

So, here’s a list of things I’m going to do to fill my self-imposed recovery-related activities requirements:

  • Meetings
  • Coaching volleyball
  • Organizing volleyball clinics for the community
  • Playing volleyball (hopefully joining a league soon) — instead of telling my team I had to work late or some other excuse, actually showing up to games
  • Reading WFS/recovery-related literature for at least an hour, including (but not limited to):
  • Spending time catching up on current events and international news from trusted sources like The New York Times and BBC
  • Seeing my therapist
  • Going to a doctor appointment, because I absolutely hate going to the doctor and it’s important I keep going
  • Talking/visiting with family
  • Coffee/breakfast/lunch/dinner with a friend — ie. making plans with someone and actually following through with it
  • Cooking a meal that takes more than 20 mins
  • Meditating
  • Taking a walk or a hike
  • Building/creating/working on something like a Vision Board or repurposed/refurbished furniture
  • Volunteering
    • Pet Shelters
    • Causes I believe in
    • Political parties I support
  • Writing a blog post
  • Journaling
  • Sharing my story

 

There. I’ve laid out a list of things that people can hold me accountable to when I move out. So, Mother, I know you’re reading this, you can rightfully ask me if I’m doing these things when the time comes that I’m living on my own again 🙂

May 13, 2017

Well, it’s been exactly a year since I was admitted to Gateway [note: Gateway was the first in-patient treatment center I went to in May 2016]. But this time is different because I know more than I did last year… about myself, about addiction, about what I need to do after treatment. About what I need to do during treatment. The women here are different. I tried to sit down w/a different group of people this morning, but it was much of the same… talking about old times of alcohol and drug use. Or about what they wish they would’ve tried when they were still using… like sniffing alcohol out of a meth-like pipe. I just don’t want to participate in that kind of conversation anymore. I want to keep an open mind and not fill it w/new ideas or memories of who I used to be. I want to shelve away the memories of who I used to be like an old book. But, I can’t forget it either because then I’m bound to make the same mistakes.

I must be kind to myself today and be mindful that I’m here, right now, to learn & grow into the person I want to be. I cannot & will NOT beat myself up over past decisions made under the influence because those decisions were made by a different person. My goal is honesty — w/myself, counselors, and doctors, and the other girls. Many of these girls in are in treatment for the first time and I see them making the same mistakes I did. I guess I’ll just have to take it as a reminder that I know more now than I did before and I will not make the same mistakes.

*I am lucky to have my life today and I must learn how to love myself again*

PM:

Today was a relief. It was a good day to be alive, awake, and well. It’s getting late and it’s been a long day since I didn’t sleep well last night, so I’ll just go through the highlights of the day.

  • Art class: painted a card that turned out like shit but it was still nice to paint
  • 12-step meeting: B picked a story from the Big Book about being a grateful recovering alcoholic. It was called A Late Start & I could relate to almost everything in the story. I’ll need to reread this story as a reminder of the effects/outcomes of my disease if I do this right this time.
  • Everyone (not everyone…) had family visits today, but my parents are out of town & I don’t know what the rest of my family knows, so I had downtime. It was tough, made me think about what jail might be like, but I got through it. I just had to try to keep my thoughts at bay and be kind to myself. Hopefully, my parents will come visit me next weekend and bring me some things I need and go to family counseling.
  • Being outside. It was good for my soul. It was gorgeous out, beautiful.
  • Process group. Everyone opened up tonight and it made me feel even more comfortable around everyone. I can’t believe how much better I feel only 24 hours after coming to the women’s unit.
  • DRA: Dual Recovery Anonymous. Great meeting. BIG meeting. I want to write more about it later.
  • PM Community: Had to say goodbye to B. She’s one of the nicest, most sincere people I’ve ever met. She’s also 25, has been to inpatient for alcohol 3 times, and is an inspiration to me and the rest of the women here.
    • Side note… the night counselor, R, is awesome and such a refreshing woman to be around. I’d love to keep in touch w/her after. She talked about the power of women supporting women & I forget that if I don’t make good friends with myself and get to know me… I can’t have other female friends and I’m going to have female friends in recovery.

At the end of the day, out for a smoke break, I just felt a wave of optimism about the future. Yes, I’m going to face a lot of trouble, but I will get through it, and I don’t have to drink over it.

Today, I love myself and I have people who love me and believe in me. I can do this. I WILL do this.

Honesty, mindfulness, kindness to myself and others, humility, remaining teachable — my disease does not define me.


Mindfulness walk May 14, 2017

The sky was beautiful blue with big puffy white clouds gently floating across the sky. The trees were fully in bloom w/all shades of green and the grass smelled sweet.

 

Mindfulness walks can help my recovery because it makes me focus on the here and now. It makes me focus on my sight, smell, sound, touch, and taste. It takes me out of the future & the past and brings me to the present.

Unfortunately today, my mindfulness walk was rudely interrupted by thoughts of how it would be refreshing to have an ice cold alcoholic beverage on a day like today. Then I got upset with myself for allowing such thoughts to taint a gorgeous day to be alive. I almost cried (again) out of frustration with myself because I so badly want to be happy and just LIVING for today. I thought of my parents up north, traveling to a beachy destination, being on my own again, jail, and wondered how I will do this without a drink. Then I thought to myself I just need to do the next right thing by staying here and finding sober living and committing to the program seriously. It was difficult to see J leave detox and not get distracted by my thoughts of my car in the parking lot and how easy it would be to just leave. I want my parents to come take my car so it’s not so easy.

One second, hour, day at a time.

[side note: J was a young man that I was in detox with. He was a wild child. He left detox and came back to Rosecrance 4 times in the month that I was there. On this particular day, I watched him walk out of the doors of detox, and get into a car, and drive off the property. Within 24 hours, he was back at detox. I later learned it was his 21st birthday and he wanted out to party, again.]

This AM I am feeling very hopeful and determined. It kind of scares me that I’m feeling so good only 2 days in… I don’t want to lose this feeling. I am getting cravings. But, 2 things: 1. I’m hoping to see the psych soon and get Naltrexone again and 2. I keep reminding myself what it was like to wake up in the hospital next to the cop, having no idea what happened, but knowing something really bad had happened. And then the awful detox with nothing but a few magazines and cinderblock walls w/people who were complete zombies. OMG it was fucking awful. Being completely clueless as to what I had done. I can’t forget that — I can’t forget what it was like this time because I never want to go back to that place, that feeling of complete cluelessness but knowing something terrible happened.

Anyway, it’s Mother’s Day and I feel bad that I’m not with my Mom today… but hopefully, this is the last Mother’s Day that I will be away from my family getting treatment. This time next year, I will have a few days over a year sober. I have to keep doing the next right thing and I will get there.

Today, I have to love myself, be kind to myself, and forgive myself for past transgressions. The person who made those mistakes was a past Judith, and I don’t even want to call her Judith — because she wasn’t the sweet, genuine, honest and caring Judith that everyone knows from the past. She’s in there, I just have to find her. I am lucky to have my life today.

2:15PM: We just got back from a walk and it was supposed to be a mindfulness walk [see above]. I struggled. When we first got out there I saw J, the guy I was in detox with, leave. It reminded me of how easy it would be to leave because my car is here. Even though I’m pretty sure my license is suspended/revoked, part of me doesn’t give a shit. Doesn’t give a shit about my license, my relationship with my parents, my sobriety, etc. But I HAVE to care. I must get better. I am frustrated with my sick, addict mind that tempts me like that. When I get thoughts like that I just wish I could shake the thought to walking, reading, talking, something. So I’m trying to journal my thoughts out of my head. I have to stop beating myself up and be kind to myself. I’ve made mistakes, but they do not define me. Everything happens for a reason. There’s a reason we’re all here, together (even M) to teach each other lessons.

3:15PM: Thought — when I drink, I break out in IVs, hospital gowns, and handcuffs.

PM: Today was up and down and up and down. It started out really good and my thoughts just kept racing. I can’t stop thinking about what life might end up like in jail. Shit food, no meds, no going outside, maybe TV/books, just sitting in a cell w/my thoughts. I made a huge mistake that could’ve taken someone else’s life, let alone my own life, and the guilt I feel is so immense it’s driving me crazy. I don’t even know if I DO get into a sober living environment, if I’ll just end up having to leave to go to jail. I’m driving myself crazy about it.

But, I didn’t kill anyone and I’m not dead. Even if I do go to jail, there’s still life after. It’s not prison, it’s not a life sentence. It may or may not be 3 months or 6 months. I’ll be sober at least. There will be life after jail. And I can’t make the same mistake a THIRD time. It may just be the time I kill myself or someone else.

I think the experiential group, then the 2.5 hours of downtime while everyone had visitors, and sitting around for a while really got to my head today. I felt almost manic this morning, then so all over the place by afternoon. I need to be easier on myself. It’s only day 3 in the women’s unit. And it hasn’t even been a week since I’ve been sober. This takes time. I know that.

I’m not going to spend much more time writing and instead going to focus on getting better. And staying positive. My consequences are my consequences — what happens, happens — but I don’t have to drink over it.

I love myself and forgive myself for past decisions I made under the influence. I do not have to be that person anymore. In a short while, w/a lot of hard work, mindfulness, and positivity, I will have my life back and I will be happy, healthy, and alive.


 

I remember when I made the realization that there will be life after jail, and it was mind-blowing. I was so caught up in fear and worry about the consequences of my actions, that I didn’t stop to think about what life would be like after. On a daily basis, I would remind myself that there was life after, and I had to get through that, sober, too. Once I made the realization that there was life after jail, I felt a little less like doomsday was near, I could see a very teeeeeeeny tiny light at the end of the tunnel. It was the first realization in days that actually made me feel good, instead of realizing the horror and havoc I caused in the previous 6 months.

My emotions at this time were totally overwhelming, I didn’t know what to do with all my thoughts and feelings. I could barely talk to my parents at this time. I would hear their voices and immediately, IMMEDIATELY, start bawling. I would go to talk to counselors and I would get a few words out and then have an anxiety attack, hyperventilate, and cry my eyes out. I was so raw. I wasn’t numb to everything for the first time in 6 months, and it was roaring back to me like a tsunami. I am grateful I was in a safe place to deal with all of this and make some important realizations, while putting life on hold, for a month. I needed the respite, I needed the bomb-like shelter that inpatient treatment is. I needed every emotion, tear, laugh, and person in that place, and I tried to soak it all in as best I could.

It’s inspiring to read sentences like “This time next year, I will have a few days over a year sober. I have to keep doing the next right thing and I will get there.” The mantra ‘just do the next right thing’ is STILL my saving grace. When I feel like I’m losing it and the world is throwing all sorts of shit in my direction, I resort to thinking ‘just do the next right thing’ and usually good things follow. It IS almost ‘this time next year’… I am so close I can taste it and feel it, and I want it so bad I am going to do whatever it takes to get there AND spend the first Mother’s Day with my mom in 2 years.
